Sexual Violence Awareness Month 2021

October is Sexual Violence awareness month and it is a reminder to every Queenslander that we all have a role to play in ending sexual violence.

Sexual violence has no place in our society. Sexual violence impacts all parts of the community however we know that women and children are disproportionally affected and represent the majority of victims. Tragically around one in five Australian women over the age of 15 has experienced sexual assault and this number is probably even higher as it’s an offence that still remains greatly underreported. This month is a time to recognise the many survivors and advocates that have been calling for change to put an end to sexual violence in Queensland.

Sexual Violence Awareness Month

Sexual Violence Awareness Month is held in Queensland each October to raise community awareness about sexual violence, promote the support options available to people affected by sexual violence, and continue to uphold the message that sexual violence will not be tolerated. This year’s theme is inspired by the ‘Start by Believing’ global campaign, transforming the way we respond to people who have experienced sexual violence. Activities and events are happening across Queensland to celebrate and recognise efforts to support victims and survivors, with many landmarks around the state being lit up in teal, a colour symbolising healing and trustworthiness.
