It's Australian Tick Awareness Month for Pets

Ticks, especially the Australian paralysis tick, can cause serious and potentially fatal diseases in dogs. So for the month of August, just as we are approaching the peak tick season, we’re talking all things ticks! There are three main species of Australian ticks that infest dogs: paralysis ticks, brown dog ticks, and bush ticks. Ticks can be found across Australia but the distribution varies depending on the species. Australia is home to a number of tick species that can infest dogs. Of greatest concern is the deadly paralysis tick. They are found along the east coast and a single paralysis tick can kill a dog if left untreated. Any dog that lives in, or visits a paralysis tick area, should always be protected.

It pays to prevent ticks on dogs

Many dogs with tick paralysis will require intensive care in a veterinary hospital for several days or even weeks. This level of care can cost thousands of dollars. Some dogs will sadly die despite the best veterinary care. It pays to be proactive and use an effective tick treatment for dogs all year round. National Tick Awareness Month is here and is intended to raise awareness amongst pet owners about the importance of preventing ticks, including paralysis ticks. The month aims to educate owners and encourage them to talk to their vet about the risks of ticks and how they can be prevented. Some of our local vets can give you the best advice on how to check for Ticks.
