Face masks have become the most visible sign of the 'new normal'

Wearing Face Masks is more important as WHO says 'pandemic is a long way from over'

The World Health Organization (WHO) urges people to stop playing fast and loose with the pandemic as coronavirus cases and deaths soar. The WHO said Monday the trajectory of the coronavirus pandemic is now “growing exponentially,” with more than 4.4 million new Covid-19 cases reported over the last week.

Maria Van Kerkhove, the agency’s technical lead for Covid-19, said “we’re at a critical point of the pandemic,” as some countries ease restrictions even as new cases per week are more than eight times higher than a year ago. “This is not the situation we want to be in 16 months into a pandemic where we have proven control measures. It is the time right now where everyone has to take stock and have a reality check of what we need to be doing,” she said during a press briefing. “Vaccines and vaccinations are coming online, but they aren’t here yet in every part of the world.”
The WHO urged the public and world leaders to continue to practice safety measures, including social distancing, wearing face masks, washing hands, and avoiding crowded spaces.

HOW YOU CAN HELP STOP THE SPREAD?

It has been over a year since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Face masks, social distancing and hand sanitizing have become new norms. While we are all exhausted from practicing these safety precautions, it does not mean we should stop anytime soon.

How to wear and use a face mask properly

For people who choose to wear a mask it is important to wear it properly:
  • wash or sanitise your hands before putting them on or taking them off
  • make sure the face mask covers your nose and mouth and fits snugly under your chin, over the bridge of your nose, and against the sides of your face
  • do not touch the front of your mask while wearing or removing it
  • do not allow the face mask to hang around your neck or under your nose
  • do not reuse single-use masks; wash and dry reusable masks after use and store them in a clean dry place.

Face Mask Help Protect You and Me

For people at increased risk of severe COVID-19 themselves because of older age or chronic illness, physical distancing is most important. If you cannot maintain physical distance, wearing a face mask is an important protective measure, and Face masks are an additional step to help prevent other people from getting and spreading COVID-19. They provide a barrier that keeps respiratory droplets from spreading. Wearing a face mask and taking preventive actions in public settings will help to stop the spread.
