Founded in 1968, Keep Australia Beautiful (KAB) was our nation’s first sustainable and anti-litter campaigner and has been working with communities to keep Australia Beautiful ever since.

KAB's vision for the future is for every Australian to feel inspired and empowered to take action that helps to protect our environment for generations to come.

A litter-free and sustainable Australia

KEEP AUSTRALIA BEAUTIFUL WEEK is here! This important campaign began in 1972 and is to raise awareness about the simple things we can all do in our lives to reduce our impact on the environment and encourage action. Every year has a specific theme to help people think about litter and waste management, and this year will be focused on plastic. The focus is on reducing plastic use and reusing and recycling the bits that have already been used. Plastics are one of our biggest problems in the environment and we all need to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic to prevent it from becoming litter.

Keep Australia Beautiful Week is intended to raise awareness about how important it is to protect the environment. We can all help make a difference. So how can you help? How about that takeaway coffee cup some of you still love to have? Did you know around 1 billion single-use coffee cups get thrown away every year in Australia? Although some coffee cups look recyclable, most need to go in the general waste bin as they contain polyethylene and styrofoam. These materials can take more than a million years to decompose in landfills. Maybe you could go buy a reusable coffee cup this week and help the environment by not throwing out single-use coffee cups. If you forget your cup, you can also ask for no lid, which will help as plastic coffee lids are one of the worst plastics in our oceans.

If you would like to get involved you can follow the Keep Australia Beautiful pledge:

  • Choose what plastics item you’re giving up for the week and commit
  • Swap out your single-use plastic item with eco-friendly alternatives
  • Share your ditching plastic and tell your friends about it

Together, we can all help Keep Australia Beautiful! #keepaustraliabeautiful #mediscrubs
